Elven life is characterized by nihilism. The elves once owned all of Shetal, and some of the eldest still remember the day that the last claimant to the Tar-E'rain was ripped apart in the streets by his own people to prevent 100 more years of war. Elven life was drastically changed by over 600 years of civil war, their once great empire fractured into city states often under the rule of some lord. Many local positions of power have been taken from the elves during the fall. Elves only have a few great cities left and lost much of their technical and magical advancements during the war. The war at its peak drastically changed the politcal and economic landscape of Shetal allowing catfolk to migrate northward and settle on the steppes. Additionally the very geography of Shetal was changed by great and terrible magics wrought by mighty battlemages during the conflict. One of the worst consequences of the war was the decline of the elven race itself. Elves have children slowly and at the height of the empire their population was at an all time high. It would take generations of elves before their population reaches pre-fall heights (an eleven generation is 750 years). Elves have long memories and bear grudges, sometimes for hundreds of years.
Sunstone was the capitol of the western half of Shetal and one of the prominent cities in the entire empire
ideally situated to trade with the orcs of the north and the tengu of the emerald isles
The high white spires of sunstone were once the seat of power for the Tar-E'Fer (sea king) a prominent position in the old empire
Sunstone is very multicultural but is primarily made up of dwarves, elves and halflings.
The ruling class of Sunstone are the 12, each of the 12 noble elven houses of sunstone send a representative and all decisions are made by a vote. Often petitioners of other races try to curry favor with several houses to gain advantages.
Sunstone is a trade hub they are also known for their pearls and magical crafts.
The twelve noble families of sunstone all bear grudges from the civil war and their exists a cold war between the houses. Outright conflict is forbidden expressly but assassins, theft and sabotage are still on the table.
In the continent of Shetal the years are divided between before collapse B.C. and after collapse A.C. the current year is 354 A.C.. 0 A.C. is the year that the last successor was killed.
The elves of yore once had pantheons and gods but these ideologies fell by the wayside, during thousand year civil war (in practice during this era there were periods of cold war and armistices). What replaced them was a sort of unbelief, how could a god exist and simply watch the atrocities that were committed. Temples burned, fields of grain destroyed, famine, pestilence, public executions and some of the bloodiest battles that ever existed on the face of the world.
This all changed during the last century of the civil war (3200 B.C.) in which a prominent elf prophet named Shul declared that this world was merely the dream of the Godhead Sholeor (which the river Shole is named for). However this did not mean that life was meaningless to ascend to the status of dreamer and become a godhead oneself was the ultimate goal.
Shul believed that to ascend to the status of dreamer you had to balance all aspects of your existence and come to accept how ultimately meaningless your life is in the grand scale of the dream. However you still had to continue living and striving toward a greater consciousness despite the futility of it all.
Shul also spoke of the great wheel that governed the cycle of reincarnation and actions that one did in a past life still scarred ones mind.
The elves embraced this religion during this era and continue to "worship" Sholeor to this day sometimes even modern elves have flashbacks and memories of their past lives.
